Beaded Doll from Capetown

I have been really enjoying the fact that the usual 50 or so robo-calls a day have ceased.  But it turns out that we have been without phone service at the gallery for the last week!  Apparently a wet cable many blocks west of us, we are told.
Thank you Verizon!

Beaded Doll from Capetown
SKU: CPD-76

By Rachel - Capetown, South Africa
Glass beads, cotton fabric.
(6 1/4" h. x 3" w. x 2" d.)

Artist Mathapelo Ngaka in Santa Fe, July 2006.

The 180 women currently participating in the project are producing a variety of one-of-a-kind dolls and bags. In designing and creating these artworks, the women draw on and renew the rich artistic traditions of their several ethnic groups - Xhosa, Zulu, Ndebele, Sotho and others. In thse works the bead artists of the Cape townships are creating a new, often humorous and sometimes quite startling synthesis of folk traditions.
