Jean-Baptiste Jean was born in Cap Haitien in 1953. His parents were a mason and a seamstress. He worked as a carpenter until he was invited to work in the studio of the master Cap Haitien painter, Philomé Obin. He worked there for two years before beginning to paint on his own. He became one of the leading practitioners of the Cap Haitien school of Haitian painting. Jean-Baptiste Jean passed away in 2002.
