We don't have much information about this fascinating collection of vintage Nigerian silk-screened workplace safety posters. They were collected by an American, George H. Stathes (1925-1996) who worked in Nigeria in the 1960's (A collection of 1300 of Mr. Stathes' photographs of Nigeria and elsewhere in Africa in the 1960's is now housed in the National Anthropological Archives of the Smithsonian Institution). All of these posters were silk-screen printed by the Federal Ministry of Information and issued by the Federal Ministry of Labor. They are signed by a number of different artists, including L. A. Ogunade, Eben. Alder, S. A. Jinadu and J. Owei.
Note: The posters were in storage by Mr. stathes and his heirs for about fifty years and are generally in good condition, but some have some signs of fading, discoloring and/or folding of the paper on the edges, primarily in the upper left corner. See photos.
I will be away from the gallery from January 27th to February 4th, and so will not be shipping orders or open for visitors at the gallery. The Indigo Arts website will be active as always. I will respond to emails as soon as possible. I will be able to ship orders after February 4th, 2025.
