"Los Recicladores" or How the Other Half Live - Retablo

Indigo Arts' Philadelphia gallery space is closed as I move upstairs to a new space on the fourth floor of the Crane Building.  I hope to be up and running again later in May, on a "by appointment or by chance" basis.  Meanwhile, the Indigo Arts online gallery is operating as usual, though shipments may be delayed a bit.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions in the mean time.

Thanks,

Tony

Claudio Jimenez Quispe (Peru), 2017
Painted plaster sculpture in painted wood box
(9 3/4" h. x 11 3/4" w. x 3" d.).
Claudio explained to me that this retablo depicts the underworld of people that live well below the poverty line in Peruvian society - living by "reciclando", competing with the rats and dogs to recycle the trash and garbage produced by the society.

Claudio Jimenez Quispé at International Folk Art Market Santa Fe, NM, July 2004

Claudio Jimenez Quispe is an internationally renowned maker of retablos. Originally from a famous family of retablo makers in Ayacucho, he now works in Lima. His work has been exhibited all over the world, and he frequently demonstrates his exquisite technique, as at Santa Fe's International Folk Art Market.  Other members of his family, such as siblings Nicario, Edilberto, Eleudora and Mabilon, and nephew and niece Luis and Julia Huamani Rodriguez are also skilled retablistas.
