Deborah Cholet 1954 - 2015
by AFisherI am sad to report that Indigo co-founder and my former wife Deborah Cholet passed away on Thursday, October 15th, 2015. Deb (Devi) was an artist, designer, and a jeweler. She was a collector of art, cats and birds, and a bright shining spirit.
Trained as an interior designer, Deb began to design and make jewelry in the mid 1980's - starting with a few African trade beads we picked up in New York. She soon wanted a place to sell her work and the textiles and folk art we had collected from Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti and West Africa. This became the first Indigo, opened in Philadelphia in 1986. We ran the business together until 2008. Deb's genius for color was reflected in five Indigo stores and galleries, in the art we exhibited and in the jewelry she designed.
This season brings Los Dias de los Muertos, the Days of the Dead - Halloween and All Souls' Day in this country. In Mexico it is the custom to build an altar or ofrenda in the home, the street or in the cemetery, to welcome back the spirits of the dead.
Rest in Peace, Deb.
