Fernando Olivera 1962 - 2018
by AFisherWe are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the great Oaxacan artist Fernando Olivera.
Fernando was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1962 and passed away yesterday, June 5th, 2018. He studied at the school of Bellas Artes at the Benito Juárez University in Oaxaca with the Japanese/Mexican master Shinzaburo Takeda, and taught there for many years himself.
Fernando’s work is grounded in the life, the culture and the myths of the Oaxacan people. It always reflected his social and political concerns as well - whether for the struggles of the Tehuana women of the Isthmus, the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, or the brutal conflict and suppression in Oaxaca in 2006.
Many who know nothing of his other work will know his illustrations for the award-winning Children’s book, “The Woman Who Outshone the Sun”.
At Indigo Arts we had the privilege of knowing and working with this creative and gentle man for more than thirty years. Adios Fernando.
