About the Artist
Roberto Torres Lameda was born in 1956, in Paraiso, Cuba. He is a member of the 'Grupo Bayate' collective of self- taught artists in the Village of Mella, near Santiago de Cuba. Torres Lameda paints lovely, minutely-detailed landscapes and natural scenes. When not painting Torres Lameda works as a driver and an electrician. He has been in numerous group shows in Cuba and the United States. His first visit to the United States was for the Por Un Mundo Mejor exhibition at Indigo Arts Gallery in October and November 2002, and his work was included in the 2009 show, Visiones 2: New Art from Cuba.
Since 2010 Roberto's work has been displayed almost every summer at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe. In March 2024 it was included in Cuban Self-Taught: Paintings from the Indigo Arts Collection a show at the Zephirin-Giannetta Gallery in Ardmore, PA, and in November 2024 in Por Un Mundo Mejor, a show celebratiing thirty years of the Grupo Bayate at the Salzmann Photography Center in Philadelphia. Roberto has now emigrated to Brazil and unfortunately does not appear to be producing any new work.
