Haitian Art Society 2016 meeting in San Francisco
by AFisher
Just back from the annual meeting of the Haitian Art Society in San Francisco.
It was a four day feast of Haitian art - visiting collections and collectors all around the Bay area. For those who share this particular obsession it is our once a year opportunity to immerse ourselves in Haitian art - paintings, sculpture, flags and papier maché - with collections of Mexican and international folk art as an extra bonus. We were hosted by collectors in Palo Alto, Orinda, Novato and Stockton, as well as San Francisco itself. The depth of the collections was quite astounding - from collectors who have worked in, visited, written about and generally been obsessed with Haiti for the last sixty years and more. One of many highpoints was a visit with Herb Gold, author of the aptly titled memoir, The Best Nightmare on Earth. Another highpoint, for this northeasterner, was the lovely Springy weather!
