About the Artist

Gary Darius
Gary Darius

Born in Croix-des-Bouquets in 1969, he speaks Creole and French.  He was the son of Andre Darius (a cabinet-maker) and of Laura Edmond (a seamstress).  His uncles are cabinet-makers with the exception of one who is a cobbler.  Gary was born a Catholic.  At the age of four he was converted to the Baptist Church.  Since the age of 8, he has regularly attended thebTemple of the Kingdom of Jehovah's Witnesses, and has even become one of their preachers.  ...

For many years, Gary lived on and uncle's property where Janvier and Serener Louisjuste's workshop used to be.  The kay, made of dirt and corrugated iron, was quite modest.Since 1986, Gary has moved away from Noailles.  he lives with his family on a small property where there are tall, leafy trees that bring him shade and coolness.  Gary started to hammer at he age of four,r, and at the age of eight he was already tracing out designs.  He works either on commission or through his personal inspiration.  "As far as I am concerned, this inspiration comes from above, because nobody can be inspired without,t the guidance of a spirit."  Even though he asserts: "I am not much of a Voodooist, I don't know anything about it"  most of his work is inspired by voodoo.
