The Baigas are an indigenous tribal community from Central India who believe in living in harmony with nature. They consider the Earth as a Mother and do not practice plough agriculture as they feel it will hurt Her. They are essentially forest dwellers and believe that the Divine Creator created forests to provide everything necessary for human life. Their origin myths speak of the Divine Creator giving the Baigas special knowledge to live in and off the forest. They lead very simple and non-materialistic lives. Their art on paper and canvas, which is a recent phenomenon, depicts their age-old reverence for Nature.
