Africa Imprint: Art from Africa and the Diaspora

February 14, 2013 to April 6, 2013

Indigo Arts presents a selection of artwork from African and the African diaspora. The exhibition includes paintings, prints and sculpture by artists from Brazil, Botswana, Cuba, Haiti, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania. The exhibit reflects both the diversity of work from the African continent and the rich trans-Atlantic tradition of African descendants in the New World. Featured artists include Xhose Noxo of Botswana, Jose Borges of Brazil, Alejandro Lazo, Manuel Mendive and José Montebravo of Cuba, Gerard, Payas, Prospere Pierre-Louis and Louisiane Saint-Fleurant of Haiti, Cartoon Joseph and George Thairu of Kenya, Yinka Adeyemi and Twins Seven-Seven of Nigeria, and Mohamed Charinda and George Lilanga of Tanzania.

Reduction linocut, #6/20, 2007
(7 3/4" h. x 11 3/4" w. image size on 11 1/4" x 15" sheet)

Qhaqhoo joined the Kuru Art Project as a young teenager in 1991 as one of the first artists of the project. Through the years he maintained a style with clear cut edges and clean flat spaces. His work reflects a simplicity that is peculiar to him. In his simplified animal and plant forms lies a resemblance to the rock art that was done centuries ago by his ancestors. His work has been received favorably and has been exhibited together with other Kuru Art worldwide. Qhaqhoo was invited to participate in the Intergrafia’94 World Award Winners Gallery, in Katowice, Poland and in Ronneby, Sweden. His work was also accepted for the MTG’94 (International Print Triennial) Krakow, Poland, Intergrafia ’94, Branska Bystrica, Slovakia and Print Triennial ’94, Consumenta’95 in Nuremberg, Germany.  (Bio courtesy of Kuru Art Project).

Thamae Kaashe (1979 -)
Thamae’s artistic career started when he joined the Kuru Art Project as an artist in 1990. Since then his work developed through different stages, from fantastic swirling compositions in his early years to colourful work with a lot of small detail, to art representing social and environmental issues such as the linocuts which won him the first prizes in Botswana’s National President’s competitions for 2013 and 2014. He often paints extremely large canvasses but he also enjoys making lino prints, etchings and lithographs. The process of mono printing suits his specific style very well. Together with the Kuru art project Thama’s work had been exhibited worldwide. (Bio courtesy of Kuru Art Project)

Twins Seven-Seven (1944 - 2011), Oshogbo, Nigeria
c.1978
Ink, pastel and oli on cloth
(50 1/2" h x 30 1/2"w)

At the entry to the lane that leads to Prince's compound in Osogbo, a palm-wine tapper sits on a bicycle, welded to Prince's design out of scrap metal. In Amos Tutuola's "Palm-Wine Drinkard", the drinard hunts for his dead tapster in the domain of the dead....

"This is when I was working on the book of Amos Tutuola, like Palm-Wine Drinker, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and something like that."

"I made a poem about whoever want me to die earlier will be killed by a palm-wine tapper bicycle, because palm-wine tapper bicycle have no insurance. It was a song from, like, nineteen seventy-four."
