Note:
With the high cost of shipping many of our customers choose to ship by USPS. For small and light shipments this is usually less expensive, but please be aware that their estimates are often wrong and their service can be very slow (sixteen days for Priority Mail from Philadelphia to New York City recently). The service is not always as economical as it may appear, particularly on larger or more valuable shipments. USPS estimates only include insurance up to $100 for its domestic shipments. If you ask for full insurance we will recalculate the shipping cost and send you an invoice for any difference in cost. For overseas shipments USPS will not insure for over $650. On request we can get estimates for overseas shipping from DHL.

The Woman with Four Breasts
SKU: IF-2303

Oshogbo, Nigeria, c.2007
Hammered aluminum relief
(23 5/8” h. x 15 7/8” w.)

The Woman with Four Breasts is an old Yoruba story.  A depiction of this tale by Isola's uncle, Asiru Olatunde, is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art (see photo in our Asiru Olatunde bio.).  It is described as follows:
A long time ago, there reigned a king whose wife gave birth to a female child with four breasts. The king was ashamed of his daughter and when she grew up, she chose to leave her father. In the bush (the uncultivated land outside town), she met a hunter, and they got married. Their marriage was based on two promises: he would not abuse her because of her four breasts and she would not cook certain foods that were forbidden to him. The couple's eventual breaking of these two vows led to a fight and the departure of the woman. The woman returned to her father, the king, but she still felt unaccepted and returned to the bush where she became a river. The king searched for his daughter and found the river and returned to his palace and rejoiced. (Smithsonian National Museum of African Art)

Born in the Ghanzi district, Qgam joined the Kuru Art Project in 1997. Through his art, he portrays a deep knowledge of the animals, the veld and the traditions of his people. He is a good traditional dancer and often takes part in dance ceremonies in the village. Along with the other Kuru artists, his work has been exhibited worldwide. He attended the Thapong International Artists workshop in Botswana in 1999 and found it a very enriching experience. He enjoyed working with different artists but seems not to have been influenced by their styles, which differs widely from his own.  (Bio courtesy of Kuru Art Project).

Thamae Kaashe (1979 -)
Thamae’s artistic career started when he joined the Kuru Art Project as an artist in 1990. Since then his work developed through different stages, from fantastic swirling compositions in his early years to colourful work with a lot of small detail, to art representing social and environmental issues such as the linocuts which won him the first prizes in Botswana’s National President’s competitions for 2013 and 2014. He often paints extremely large canvasses but he also enjoys making lino prints, etchings and lithographs. The process of mono printing suits his specific style very well. Together with the Kuru art project Thama’s work had been exhibited worldwide. (Bio courtesy of Kuru Art Project)

(50 1/2" h x 30 1/2"w)

At the entry to the lane that leads to Prince's compound in Osogbo, a palm-wine tapper sits on a bicycle, welded to Prince's design out of scrap metal. In Amos Tutuola's "Palm-Wine Drinkard", the drinkard hunts for his dead tapster in the domain of the dead....

"This is when I was working on the book of Amos Tutuola, like Palm-Wine Drinker, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and something like that."

"I made a poem about whoever want me to die earlier will be killed by a palm-wine tapper bicycle, because palm-wine tapper bicycle have no insurance. It was a song from, like, nineteen seventy-four."
