"Bossou" Sequinned Denim Jacket

Unusual jacket decorated by sequins and beads to depict the Vodou "lwa" Bossou, in the form of a bull's head. Attributed to Antoine Oleyant, the most original, celebrated and sought-after artist of the era. Style of bull's head is characteristic of Oleyant's style as are the "pwen" star figures on the front and back of the jacket.
Sequins and beads on Gap cotton denim jacket.
Size: small (women's).

Provenance: purchased by current owner from Gloria Frank Gallery, NYC, c.1990.
Condition: Excellent (two sequins missing on back).

Oil paint on "kwi" gourd (13” h. x 10 3/4” w. x 5” d.). Completed January 17, 2004.
Provenance: Collection of Nancy Josephson. Nancy watched André Pierre paint this "kwi" and purchased it from him in 2004. She believes it was probably the last of these gourd paintings that he made. He passed away the following year. The crack on the left side occurred as the gourd dried. Although Andre Pierre painted these paintings of the Vodou "loa" deities throughout his career., they are now comparatively rare.
